The cloth

Aso oke is woven in narrow strips on a traditional loom and hand-joined into panels. This one carries a metallic thread through a green ground, which is what produces the two-tone shift: moss in shadow, gold where the light hits it. Photographs pick it up differently in daylight and under hall lighting, and both are in the gallery so you can see the range before you commit to the colour.

The cloth is woven to order. That is the part brides ordering from abroad underestimate most often. Weaving to a specific shade takes weeks before any cutting begins, and no amount of paying more compresses it.

The shoulders and neckline

An off-shoulder neckline cut in a soft scallop and finished with a fine green beaded edge, sitting under structured puff shoulders that hold their shape without padding you out. The sleeve narrows down the arm and then opens into a flared bell at the cuff, which is the detail that reads from the back of a hall.

The skirt and the beadwork

A fitted column to the floor, with a beaded serpentine trim running vertically down the front. It is worked by hand in a green that matches the ground rather than contrasting with it, so from a distance it reads as a line of light down the body and only resolves into beadwork up close. Restraint is deliberate here. The cloth is already doing a great deal, and heavy stone work on top of a metallic weave fights itself.

The gele and ipele

Both are cut from the same weave. The gele is shaped to your head rather than bought in as a generic pre-tie, and arrives already formed. The ipele is the shoulder sash, folded and carried over the arm as shown, or draped across the shoulder depending on how your family wears it. Both are included, because an aso oke look is not finished without them.

The couple set

The groom’s four-piece is made alongside it: agbada, buba, sokoto and fila, with hand embroidery worked into the chest and cap. Traditional Yoruba couple dressing does not require you to match exactly. Here the groom is in champagne against the bride’s green, tied together by the beads, which reads better in photographs than two people in identical cloth. Order both together so the palette is decided once.

Custom made, in your colour

Every piece is cut to measure. Because the cloth is woven to order, the colour is genuinely open: the classical etu indigo and sanyan beige, a metallic in any shade, or an exact match to your aso ebi palette from a swatch photograph. Sage green photographs unusually well against both dark and fair skin, which is part of why brides keep coming back to it, but nothing about this design is tied to the colour.

Regular alterations: a longer or shorter bell on the sleeve, a plainer shoulder without the puff, a heavier beaded trim, a fuller gele, and simplified versions for mothers, sisters and the aso ebi group. Group orders need a much longer runway, since every metre is woven before anything is cut.

Most brides who commission this never see the Lagos studio before the box arrives. The process is a video consultation, a measurement guide we send so a local tailor takes the numbers correctly, progress photographs through production, and tracked shipping. We deliver routinely to the UK, US, Canada, Ireland and Australia.

Two things to plan for. Weaving plus hand beadwork takes weeks, and the atelier accepts a limited number of bridal commissions each season, so send your date before ordering and we will tell you honestly whether it is possible. And import duty is charged by your own customs authority on arrival, not by us. Ask for the declared value and commodity code up front so you can check your rate and budget for it.
